Frequently Asked Questions

What is sex therapy?

Sex therapy specifically addresses sexual issues, such as low desire, performance concerns, sexual dysfunction, desire discrepancy, compulsive sexual behavior, or exploring new dynamics in a sexual relationship. It focuses on improving sexual well-being, communication about sexuality, and addressing any physical, emotional, or psychological factors affecting sexual health. It’s appropriate for individuals or partners dealing with sexual difficulties or seeking to enhance their sexual relationship.

How is sex therapy different from couples Counseling

Couples counseling covers a broader range of relationship issues beyond sexuality, such as communication, conflict resolution, trust, financial stress, parenting, and life transitions. It helps partners improve their overall relationship dynamic, fostering understanding, empathy, and healthy communication. While sex may come up as a topic in couples counseling, it is just one part of a broader relationship focus.

In summary, sex therapy is specific to sexual health and intimacy, while couples counseling encompasses all areas of a relationship. Both can complement each other if a couple is dealing with both relational and sexual concerns.

Do you help people who want to improve non-romantic relationships?

Yes! I work with people looking to improve all types of relationships, not just romantic ones. Whether it’s chosen family, close friends, platonic partners, or even business relationships, I support clients in fostering healthy connections. We focus on communication skills, setting boundaries, understanding each other’s strengths, and navigating life transitions. Strong, satisfying relationships, in every form, are essential for personal well-being and a fulfilling life.

What should i expect in therapy?

Therapy is a collaborative journey where we start where you are now, and help you grow into the life you want to lead. From the moment you walk through the door—or log into a session—you’ll find a safe, supportive space where your experiences, challenges, and goals are deeply honored.

Together, we’ll explore the patterns and stories that shape your life, untangle what’s holding you back, and create new pathways toward healing and growth. Expect real conversations that flow naturally, tailored techniques to fit your needs, and a blend of warmth, expertise, and humor along the way. Therapy isn’t about perfection—it’s about embracing your wholeness and finding your unique way forward.

Your journey will be rooted in compassion and curiosity, with every step guided by your strengths and the vision you hold for your future. Whether you’re seeking clarity, connection, or transformation, you can expect a space where your authentic self is welcomed and celebrated.

No two paths look the same, but each one is a meaningful step toward living fully and intentionally. Therapy is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of yourself, your relationships, and the life you’re building. Let’s walk this path together.

How long does therapy usually take?

Therapy is as unique as the person seeking it, which means the length of the process varies. Some people come to therapy to work through a specific challenge or decision, finding clarity in just a few sessions. Others view therapy as an ongoing space for growth, self-discovery, and support over time. Both approaches—and everything in between—are valid.

The pace and duration of therapy depend on your goals, the challenges you’re navigating, and how deep you’d like to go. Together, we’ll set the direction and reassess as you move forward. Therapy is not about rushing to a finish line; it’s about creating meaningful, sustainable change at a pace that feels right for you.

Some clients find they benefit from weekly sessions at first, gradually shifting to bi-weekly or monthly as they feel more grounded. Others may take breaks and return as life shifts and new challenges arise. What matters most is that therapy fits your life and needs—not the other way around.

Ultimately, the journey is yours. Whether you’re here for a short chapter or an extended season, therapy offers a space to explore, heal, and grow for as long as you need.

How do i know you are the right therapist for me?

Finding the right therapist is about connection and trust. The best way to know if we’re a good fit is to start with a consultation, where we can talk about your goals and what you’re looking for in therapy. You’ll get a sense of my approach, and we can explore whether it aligns with your needs.

I work with adults and relationships, focusing on areas like intimacy, mental health, and life transitions. I offer a straightforward, supportive space where we can work together to identify challenges and create meaningful change. My approach is rooted in empathy, clarity, and evidence-based practices, but how we move forward will be guided by you.

Ultimately, therapy is a partnership. If you feel comfortable and supported, you’re on the right track. If not, I’m happy to help you find someone who better suits your needs. What matters most is that you find a therapist who feels like the right fit for you.

Is Therapy Confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential. What you share in sessions stays between us, with a few legal exceptions, such as if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others, if someone is being abused, or if required by court order. I’ll explain these limits during your first session so you fully understand your rights and privacy.

i NOTICED YOU HAVE A THEOLOGICAL DEGREE. DOES THIS MEAN WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT FAITH OR SPIRITUALITY?

If it’s not something you want to focus on, that’s fine—our work is guided by your needs and values. However, if your faith or spirituality is important to you, we can integrate it into our work together. Whether you want to explore spiritual questions, align therapy with your beliefs, or simply have them respected, I’ll meet you where you are.

Is Your Office Accessible?

My office is located in a charming older home that presents some accessibility challenges. In-person sessions require navigating a few steps at the entrance and a longer staircase to reach my second-floor office. While the seating in my office is intentionally size-inclusive, I cannot guarantee the same for other areas of the building. However, all spaces in the building are gender-inclusive, reflecting a commitment to creating a welcoming environment.

If accessibility concerns arise, I’m happy to discuss virtual options or other ways to accommodate your needs. For virtual sessions, I use a secure, user-friendly platform that works on most devices.
